· Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel rejects the international pressure to end the war until all its goals are achieved. He further added: “Even though this pressure is growing and increasing, our efforts are bearing fruit in the most important diplomatic arena which is, of course, the US.” He said that he is committed to preserving Israel’s existential interests and doubling the settlement project (February 29, 2024). · Attorney Galit Rejwan, representing Israel in proceedings against it at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) related to the Gaza war, expressed confidence that the lawsuit brought by South Africa against her country would ultimately be dismissed. · COGAT, The Israeli agency that controls access to Gaza, has imposed arbitrary and contradictory criteria, according to more than two dozen humanitarian and government officials interviewed by CNN. CNN has also reviewed documents compiled by major participants in the humanitarian operation that list the items most frequently rejected by the Israelis. These include anesthetics and anesthesia machines, oxygen cylinders, ventilators and water filtration systems. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has directed the Finance, Defense, and National Security ministries to swiftly prepare thousands of detention facilities for incoming Palestinian detainees. This instruction comes after a security meeting where Israeli military and Shin Bet representatives presented assessments indicating an expected increase in arrests of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank throughout the year. The Israeli army announced the imposition of a command citation on Brigadier General Barak Hiram, commander of the 99th Brigade, for bombing Al-Israa University in the Gaza Strip earlier this year without prior authorization. Hiram had ordered a strike on Al-Israa University in the vicinity of Gaza City in the claim that intelligence reports revealed the presence of terrorists and tunnel entrances on the university’s premises. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has sought clarifications from the Prime Minister regarding the relocation of approximately seventy orphans from Gaza to the West Bank. He characterized this action as “immoral,” suggesting that it is akin to showing mercy to the cruel. Similarly, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir commented that “In war, one must crush the enemy instead of worrying about looks.”
Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, expresses dissatisfaction with the US sanctions imposed on West Bank settlements and settlers, highlighting that this step serves as evidence that the US administration fails to distinguish between adversaries and allies. During his meeting with Catherine Colonna, who heads the UN team investigating the involvement of UNRWA employees in the October 7th attack, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen expressed his opinion that “UNRWA is part of the problem, not part of the solution”. Cohen further stressed that, “dismantling UNRWA, which has become an arm and financer of Hamas, is an inseparable part of combating Hamas.” He stressed the need to put an end to UNRWA activities not only in Gaza, but also in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). In the same context, during a meeting with Knesset Speaker MK Amir Ohana (Likud) alongside members of the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Australian Federal Parliament, Ohana stressed the necessity of replacing UNRWA, stating that it is “the body that educated those who carried out the October 7 massacre.” (March 12, 2024)
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterates that Israel will operate in Rafah, and it will not succumb to any international pressures or concerns about the safety of more than a million Palestinians seeking shelter there. The Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs, Ron Dermer, confirmed that the Israeli army will enter Rafah even if it comes at the cost of harming relations with the United States. The minister added: “It’s gonna happen. And it will happen even if Israel is forced to fight alone, even if the entire world turns on Israel, including the United States.”(March 20, 2024). The Israeli government declared the appropriation of some 8,000 dunums of Jordan Valley land and declared it state land. This decision allows Israel to construct hundreds of settlement housing units, as well as areas designated for industry and commerce purposes. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich supervised this step and said that declaring ownership of the land to the state is, “an important and strategic issue.” Peace Now Organization said, “It’s the largest since the Oslo Accords, with 2024 setting a record.” (March 22, 2024). Ben-Gvir declared war on Palestinian prisoners long before October 7, and this has included shutting down bakeries that supply bread to prisoners — described by Ben-Gvir as an “indulgence” — and drastically limiting prisoners’ water use. It’s in the food, what little of it there is, an unwelcome grit in every bite. It clumps everyone’s hair, all the time. It gets under the hijab, which women are now forced to wear all the time for lack of privacy. Their scalps constantly itch, and people are increasingly shaving their heads, a particularly painful decision for women and girls, which is yet another detail of this purposeful degradation of a whole society. On March 10, Al Jazeera reported 25 “known starvation deaths” in northern Gaza. For famine to be declared in Gaza, three criteria need to be met, says Michael Fakhri. The hospital has been the target of a massive military operation by the Israeli army for the fourth day in a row now. According to the testimonies, the Israeli army has confined all doctors and nurses in an unknown location inside Al-Shifa Complex in an effort to prevent them from carrying out their duties. Meanwhile, the sick and injured have been denied access to medical treatment and medication, resulting in the deaths of at least three patients in the past few hours. Starmer’s win is even bigger, however. He has avoided what would likely have been an embarrassing vote in parliament, laying bare deep divisions in his own party over an abject Gaza position. UK govt lawyers say Israel in breach of international law in Gaza News Desk The Cradle 31/03/2024
The UK government has received advice from its own lawyers stating that Israel has breached international humanitarian law in Gaza but has refused to make the advice public, a prominent British lawmaker has stated.
The Guardian reported on 30 March that Alicia Kearns, the Conservative chair of the House of Commons Select Committee on Foreign Affairs, said, “The Foreign Office has received official legal advice that Israel has broken international humanitarian law, but the government has not announced it.”
She added that as a result, the UK must end arms sales to Israel without delay.
